Dometic has officially launched the Front Runner Feather-Lite II rooftop tent in South Africa, bringing a revised and lighter version of one of the country’s most recognisable rooftop tent lines to the local overlanding market. 

The updated model is now available through authorised dealers.

Rooftop tents in South Africa have grown significantly in popularity over the past several years, driven by a surge in overlanding and bush camping culture. The Feather-Lite II is set to become a popular option, with its reduced weight, improved usability, and durability expected to perfectly accommodate South African conditions.

The Feather-Lite II builds on the original Feather-Lite concept with a series of functional updates aimed at the practical realities of overlanding in southern Africa. 

At 49kg with a closed profile height of just 32cm, it is among the more compact foldable rooftop tents currently available in the country, making it well suited to a wide range of vehicles without placing excessive strain on roof load ratings or affecting handling on long-distance drives.

Setup is designed to be straightforward: unlatch, unfold, and extend a telescopic ladder.  For overlanders who arrive at camp after a long day on the road, the reduced number of steps between parking and sleeping is a welcomed quality-of-life improvement.

Several new features have also been introduced to distinguish the Feather-Lite II from its predecessor. 

• A redesigned entry overhang provides improved rain protection at the opening, an important consideration during southern Africa’s summer thunderstorm season.
• A stargazing panel in the roof adds a feature that requires no explanation for anyone who has camped in the Lowveld or the Karoo on a clear night.
• Inside, a 6cm high-density foam mattress and additional storage pockets improve overnight comfort for extended trips.
• And the tent has window spring poles that enhance airflow, something to look forward to if you like camping during the warmer months.

The tent body is constructed from 400D polyester rated as waterproof and UV-resistant, with a 2000mm water column rating. 

The tent also has a removable flysheet system and additional floor storage space for gear, expanding its practicality on multi-day trips. 

The tent is designed to fit a wide range of vehicles and rack systems, from compact SUVs to full overlanding builds, making it a versatile choice for the broad spectrum of rooftop tent buyers currently active in the South African market.
